History of Maccha/ Matcha?
Green Tea was introduced to Japan by Buddhist priests from China. It was ini- tially used as a medicine and few had access to it.
In 1191, a priest named Eisai made a great contribution to tea. He planted tea trees after he returned to Japan from China. The plant was a great success and green tea began to be grown throughout Japan.
Eisai's work, Maintaining Health by Drinking Tea, educated people to the great powers of tea.
In the 1500's the great tea master Senno Rikyu established Sado, the Way of Making Tea. He elevated tea making to an art. To this day, the schools he founded: Omote-senke, Ura-senke and Mushyanokouji-senke continue his style. They not only contribute to tea, but to Japanese culture itself.
